English CALLing
Even though we may think that introducing computers in our classroom is a new trend, in fact it isn’t. CALL (which stands for Computer Asisted Language Learning) has a story of about forty years and many experts differentiatie three stages in it: Behaviouristic CALL, communicative CALL and Integrative CALL.
- Behaviouristic CALL is characterised by the amount of grammar activities (drills) and multiple choice activities. The student received instant correction and the computer also had the opportunity to show remedial work.
- Communicative CALL developed the use of computer for discussion, not only for grammatical content. It was in this stage when simulation programs were introduced. The word processor started to be used to check both grammar and spelling. It was also the moment in which the first applications that send data to the teachers were developed.
- Integrative CALL: It is characterized by the use of multimedia and Internet. Thanks to Internet, a more realistic and flexible way of teaching is possible. The learner becomes the real protagonist of his learning process.
